[ Her dress was more uncomfortable than she was willing to admit, but it was incredibly flattering, too: such were the pains of being a socialite and attending parties as fancy as these. Oh, well- the other women looked just as uncomfortable, too, when they were sure that no one was looking, but it was all for the sake of beauty, she guessed.

The drink in her hand was more of a prop than anything else, more alcoholic than she had originally anticipated. It was that and the combination of the heat and bustle of the party that had her a little light headed, but despite it all, she was having fun, too.

So Michiru slips in to stand next to Haruka, gently interrupting the blond from whatever-the-hell-it-is she's doing. ]

[ Haruka is, predictably, chatting up girls. there are four of them surrounding her, all positively, thoroughly charmed -- she offers an easy laugh, one hand comfortably dug into the pocket of her suit, the other holding onto a half-drunk glass of whiskey. she's certainly in her element, here.

Michiru's presence at her side seems to contribute to her already-alleviated spirits, and she turns to greet her with a grin. ]

Yo, Michiru. [ her answer should be evident enough. the girls she's been speaking with look at Michiru with admiration-tinged disappointment -- oh, so he had a girlfriend -- but isn't she just gorgeous? ]

[ Michiru flashes a smile at the girls and tries to suppress the little spike of jealousy she feels. It's a dumb feeling, she knows, and with a tiny, subtle smile at the girls, she touches her hand to Haruka's upper arm.

Huh. She can smell the whiskey from her glass. ]

Ah.. I hope Haruka hasn't been bothering you too much.

[ And then, to her: ]

You are having fun, then. I'm glad to see you enjoying yourself.

[ Haruka chuckles. maybe she should, as it puts quite a damper on her flirting, but she finds it impossible to mind Michiru taking responsibility for her like that -- it's actually rather endearing. ]

What about you? Have you been getting lonely?

Not at all. I was just afraid that you'd get into trouble if you were left unattended for too long.

[ She punctuates that by taking a delicate sip from her glass. If Haruka can hold her whiskey, then she can certainly hold whatever's in this fruity concoction. ]

You were worried about me? I'm touched. [ a lopsided, entertained smile, showing teeth. she eyes Michiru's glass as she drinks from it with a slightly raised eyebrow, impressed by the sheer neon-color of its contents. ]

[ Michiru's expression is almost challenging when she sees the way Haruka glances at her drink. The way she sips from the glass is all elegance, even if her face is warm with the alcohol. ]

We have to look after each other, don't we?

[ Softly, teasing, as if it were an inside joke she expected only Haruka to understand. Which it sort of was. ]

Guess so. [ she ducks her head, expression momentary changing into something softer. but it's gone in a flash, and then she's pointing a finger at Michiru's drink. ] Is that alright? That stuff tends to be pretty strong, you know. [ it's a sincere question, born of genuine concern -- if there's the slightest hit of condescension coming off her words, it's purely unintentional.

probably. ]

It's nothing that I can't handle, Haruka.

[ And if her tone is a little chastising, that is also purely accidental. As if to make a point, she finishes her own drink, then glances back at the food and drinks laid out.

It's really not that bad, once you get used to the taste, she muses, and contemplates having another. Alcoholics are the ones who stand around with empty glasses. ]

All right, then. [ oh dear, could it be that she's riled her up a bit? a fascinating thought. it's so rare to see Michiru even slightly fazed by anything. this might be worth pursuing further.

Haruka downs the remainder of her drink in one go, an unspoken challenge, and calmly swallows through the burning sensation it sets to her throat. ]

[ Michiru sees that challenge and pretends that she doesn't. ]

Would you like me to get you some water?

I'm fine. I think I'll go get a refill, actually.

[ Haruka she is not going to let you win this... ]

Really? Mm, me too, I think.

[ a most gentlemanly offer of the arm. ] Come on, then.

[ And Michiru actually giggles softly at the offered arm - she's mildly horrified at herself, but Haruka was right, that drink had been stronger than she'd thought - and takes it. ]

Lead the way.

[ that laugh is much less restrained than the one Haruka's used to hearing, short and refined and stifled behind a delicately-curled hand -- it's quite the lovely sound, in fact.

she leads them both to the bar, ordering another fill of whiskey for herself. she admittedly has no idea what that ungodly pink liquid in Michiru's glass was, so she avoids taking the liberty of ordering for her, as well. ]

[ That ungodly pink liquid in her drink was delicious, and Michiru is happy to order another for herself, smiling pleasantly at the bartender. She doesn't release Haruka's arm however, and if she leans just a little into it, who would know? ]

[ Haruka feels the shift in Michiru's weight, as subtle as it is, and finds that she's rather comfortable that way. her fingertips trace the edge of her newly-filled glass, and her gaze flickers towards Michiru's face, though it's a moment longer before she can think of something to say to accompany it. ] You do this kind of thing a lot?

What?

[ And it takes her a moment to fully consider the question. She takes the smallest of sips, not releasing Haruka's arm. ]

No, not at all. I'm usually a little more reserved at parties like this.

[ It's okay to admit that privately to Haruka, right? ]

[ she props her chin up on the back of one hand, head tilting sideways as she emits an appreciative hum. ] I was thinking it's unusual to see you let go, even a bit.

[ And that actually gives her brief pause. ]

I could say the same of you.

[ her brow lifts with honest curiosity. it's harder to be a good judge of character when you yourself are concerned, after all. ] That so?

[ And Michiru is just wondering if it would be a sign of weakness if she asked to sit down. ]

Well- your driving is an exception, I suppose.

[ Haruka would hardly object -- her last drink's begun to take effect, evoking a warmth in her chest and causing the edges of her mind to grow fuzzy.

she's definitely not going to be the one to ask, though. ]

I guess there's only so much freedom we can allow ourselves, huh?

[ And more than anything else, Michiru suddenly doesn't want to be here anymore. She just clears her throat softly, cautiously sipping at her drink. ]

We could allow ourselves the freedom of stepping outside for a minute. It's a little warm in here.

[ Haruka blinks at the suddenness of it, but is happy enough to oblige. ] Sure.
