Akiha likes her best like this, she thinks. Nico's... Nico is cute, at times, but it usually rings a little hollow. Then again, Akiha tends to doubt everything, no matter who it comes from or how it's delivered. Only a few people have her complete trust.
Somehow, Nico's become one of them. Akiha bites her lip as Nico moves, wanting to break the incredibly close eye contact. Wanting, but not doing. It's way too intense. Akiha feels like she's frozen.
Even after Nico's done talking, Akiha just stares at her. Slowly, she shakes her head, reaching out to stroke Nico's hair. "I'm sorry," Akiha says, in not much more than a whisper. They're so close that Nico can hear it anyway.
"I know you're serious, I just..." Akiha realizes halfway through that she shouldn't be making excuses.
"Displays of affection are still new. Especially things like that." She only has her relationship with her brother to compare it to, even if it wasn't the same type of love. And as much as she cares about him, she was five years old the last time she told him she loved him. Their relationship is quiet, except when she's scolding him. The moments she remembers most fondly are the moments of mutual, comfortable silence, understanding each other without saying a word.
Definitely not Nico. For one thing, she hasn't known Nico her entire life. There are things Nico has no way of knowing without being told, even with as close as they've gotten.
She nuzzles her cheek against Nico's, slowly, like she's not sure if she's doing it right. "Give me some time to get used to it."
Slowly, she pulls a few inches away from Nico, looking her deep in the eyes once more. "I love you, very much." It's probably the first time Akiha's said that without prompting, without Nico outright telling her to. "Frankly, I'm terrible at showing it, but I do."
