The harshness would be tolerable -- it's not like Pearl isn't capable of taking critique or working hard -- but the smugness Jasper heaps liberally on top of it sets every one of her teeth on edge during practice, makes her brow furrow in an echo of annoyance even now. Still, Rose's suggestion draws a laugh out of her: half-delighted, half-scandalized. Of course Rose is joking, but--
